Criminology (from Latin crīmen, “accusation”; and Greek -λογία, -logia) is the scientific study of criminal behaviour, on individual, social and natural levels, and how it can be managed, controlled and prevented. This course will enable students to use theories of criminality to analyse criminal situations and make recommendations for policy. Students also develop the knowledge and skills to research policy in practice, assess campaigns for changes in awareness and examine information to review verdicts in criminal cases.

The Level 3 qualification is graded A* – E and attracts the same UCAS points as an A Level. Assessment comprises four units in total, two internally assessed units (controlled assessment) and two externally assessed units (examinations) taken at the end of Year 12 and Year 13, enabling a variety of assessment methods spread across two years of study.

• The first unit covers different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported. Students study campaigns for change then design their own using different forms of media.
• The second unit allows students to gain an understanding of why people commit crime, drawing on criminological theory from a critical viewpoint.
• The third unit will provide an understanding of the criminal justice system from the moment a crime has been identified to the verdict. Students explore the techniques used during the investigation process, then the process for prosecution of suspects, including trial procedures and the role of the jury.
• In the final unit, students discover how the criminal justice system works in England & Wales; how laws are made, the aims and forms of punishment. They will learn about how the police, CPS, probation, prisons, the judiciary and charities/pressure groups work together to try to achieve social control.
